It's that time again! Yet again, I have been unable to beat back the menace of time. To commemorate 29 years of on this earth (almost), it's time to celebrate with the two worthwhile things in life: alcohol and public transportation. Sorry "friendship", you just missed the cut. Yet again, we shall Drink the Link!
If you're asking "What's that?", here's your answer. We start at the airport, grab a drink, jump on the Link and then go to (almost?) every stop getting off and enjoying a nice adult beverage. Can't commit a whole day to drinking? Meet up some time during the day for a partial trip.
But maybe instead you're asking "Really, this again?". Yeah, last year we only made it to 8 of 13 stops, but this year it's going to be different! The pace will be faster, the scheduling tighter, but the good times should be just as good. The link shall be drunk. And here are the venues!
Arrival Time | Station | Venue |
---|---|---|
11:00 | Airport | Pilot House |
Last year an aggreived and drunk army guy, angry at being denied entrance to Canada over a DUI, shouted his way out of the USO and into the Pilot House. Then he shouted his way out of the Pilot House (with an assist by the consumate professional bartender, who bartered chips for his exit) and into our collective memory. We will never forget you, soldier. May this year start as auspiciously. (This place is in the airport, head towards concourse B and it will be before security.) | ||
12:00 | Tukwilla | China Pavilion |
Biggest surprise from last year. Nicest staff and regulars, greasily satisfying Chinese food, and incredibly cheap drinks. Only place where I got a free drink | ||
Rainier Beach | A swig from the Gengar flask | |
There are no bars near Rainier beach, which is a travesty. Last year we lost literal hours to hoofing it to Nate's Wings and Waffles, eating far too much, and coming back. This year I'll bring a flask full of something vaguely drinkable. I hope we don't get caught! | ||
13:00 | Othello | Cajun Crawfish |
Sorry, Huarachitos, opening at 3 is not going to cut it this year. So we're going to a place where you can order seafood in plastic bags. Or a beer and some onion rings, more likely. | ||
14:00 | Columbia City | Columbia City Ale House |
An alehouse in Columbia City. Last year did nothing to change this sentiment. | ||
15:00 | Mt. Baker | Cafe Ibex |
They're so nice! | ||
16:00 | Beacon Hill | Oak |
Same people who do Redwood! Staff generally less grumpy! If we're on schedule we'll be there right as they're opening. | ||
17:00 | SODO | Ghostfish brewing |
Bypassed this place last year because of lack of time. Gluten free beer made with weird other grains. Worth a try, right? | ||
18:00 | Stadium | Henry's Tavern |
Reasonable-sounding sports bar. | ||
19:00 | International District | Fort St. George |
Where else can you drink plum wine, eat fried chicken, lose your hat, and then retrieve it two days later? | ||
20:00 | Pioneer Square | Collins Pub |
One time Eli (RIP [not really]) wanted to get beer but was very adamant about not crossing any bodies of water or going south of downtown. So I picked the most south westerly bar in downtown for spite. This is that bar. It is also one of the best beer bars in Seattle according to a book. | ||
21:00 | University Street | Italian Family Pizza |
$1.50 Bud lites and Bud heavies. Big pizzas. There are approximately 0 things wrong with Italian Family Pizza. They close at 10, so in deference to the Italian Family if we're behind schedule there's always the Blarney Stone, which I think is a place that I once walked around the block twice in order to kill time until their happy hour. | ||
22:00 | Westlake | Nightlight Lounge |
Reading the reviews of this place I saw the word 'cheap' so many times. I'm not sure how I didn't know about this. Cash only dive. F. Yeah. |
With that all worked out, here's some general advice, largely copied from last year:
